On March 9, 1916, the Mexican revolutionary, Pancho Villa and his men raided the village of Columbus. During the raid, several buildings were burned and 18 U.S. citizens were killed. Soon after the raid, General John Pershing led the 13th Cavalry on the Punitive Expedition into Mexico in pursuit of Villa. In 2016, the Village of Columbus commemorated the 100th anniversary of this historic event. At 10:00am, March 9, 2016, the Columbus Historical Society held a memorial service to remember the citizens who were killed in the raid.
